Women’s club builds overseas links

CALLIOPE “Cally” Couchell has been re-elected as president of the American Women’s Club in the Bahamas for a second term while the organisation has become a member of the global Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas.

AWC Bahamas, founded in 1959, is a social and civic organisation dedicated to charity work and the uplifting and networking of American women in the Bahamas.

Although led by American women, membership is open to women from all walks of life, regardless of race or nationality. US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Lisa Johnson serves as AWC’s honorary president.

Also named to the AWC Bahamas board of directors were Cassandra Price, first vice-president; Fay Sands and Patricia Breen Giancola, second vice presidents; Joan Pinder, treasurer; Alison Bethel McKenzie, recording secretary and Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas (FAWCO) representative; Cally Maillis, corresponding secretary; Colleen Lowe, communications chair; and Jayne Holland, executive board support committee.

FAWCO is an international network of independent organisations whose mission is to serve as a resource and channel of information among its members, to provide a voice for American women abroad and to support the rights of Americans worldwide, and to contribute actively to the global community with a specific focus on education, the natural and human environment, multicultural understanding and international goodwill.
