A MAN was hit by a car and killed early on Wednesday morning while attempting to cross Fire Trail Road on his way to work.

Inspector Carlos Mitchell, serious accident manager at the Road Traffic Department, said the victim was attempting to cross from the northern side to the southern side when he was struck by a vehicle travelling east.

"Around 6.30am, police received reports of a traffic accident on Faith Avenue west, opposite In Line Project Management," Mr Mitchell said. "The accident involved a motor vehicle and a pedestrian.

"The car was travelling east and the pedestrian was attempting to cross from the northern side to the southern side of Fire Trail Road when the collision occurred. He received serious injuries and died on the scene."

Mr Mitchell said it is too early to determine if speed was a factor in the accident and declined to comment on whether the driver will be charged. However, he did say the driver was unharmed and assisting police with their investigations.

Police have not released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.

He also warned motorists and pedestrians to be vigilant when travelling on the roads.

"We want to say to the motoring public and pedestrians to be cognisant of their surroundings and make sure to look out for vehicles and persons travelling the roads in the morning," he said.

"Look out for one another, pay attention especially where there is no pedestrian crossing. These kinds of things can be prevented."

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police immediately.
