WELL-KNOWN Grand Bahama businesswoman Hillary V E Jones, president of the Churchill and Jones Real Estate company in Freeport, has died. She was 69.

Ms Jones died last weekend after battling a long illness. As a successful businesswoman, Ms Jones also served as president of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce from 1993 to 1995.

Deputy Leader of the Free National Movement, Peter Turnquest, paid tribute, describing Ms Jones as a “trailblazer in the real estate business”.

In a statement yesterday, he said: “News of Ms Jones’ death this past weekend met with general sadness throughout our community. She was a Bahamian trailblazer in the real estate business on Grand Bahama. A fearless and courageous woman with an unmatched pioneering business spirit, she leaves a remarkable legacy.”

Mr Turnquest said that the establishment of Churchill & Jones Real Estate Company in Freeport more than four decades ago contributed much to the development and growth of the island. He said that Hillary Jones’ life’s work coincides with the struggles and success stories of Bahamian professionals who flourished against all odds.

“She was a woman way beyond her years with historic accomplishments and her dynamic influences with the Anglican Church, politics, major social events and the business community are well noted. She was a kind hearted giant who loved her country and valued friendships. Her outstanding leadership traits continue to inspire many,” he said.

“It is with deep sadness that on my own behalf, my family, party leader, Dr Hubert Minnis, the entire membership and supporters of the Free National Movement and in particular East Grand Bahama constituents, that I extend sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Trevor Johnson, the lone child of the late Hillary V E Jones, her siblings, and other family members and friends.”
