Jonquel Jones posts double double in 84-63 loss

GRAND Bahamian senior Jonquel Jones posted a monstrous double-double of 27 points and 17 rebounds but the No. 22/20 George Washington women’s basketball team dropped a top-25 showdown to #15/10 Stanford 84-63 at the Cardinal’s Maples Pavilion on Saturday.

A preseason Wooden Award candidate, Jones had a double-double by halftime. She connected on 11-of-18 from the floor in the game, including a career-high 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and added three blocks and an assist.

Junior Caira Washington tallied 10 points and nine rebounds and graduate student Lauren Chase contributed nine points, four assists and two steals.

Jones scored 15 points with three treys in the opening quarter as GW (2-1) took a 19-15 lead after 10 minutes of play. With Stanford (3-0) up by two at the 6:33 mark, Jones tallied seven straight points to ignite a 12-0 run that put the Colonials up 19-11 with 3:31 to go, before the Cardinal scored the final four points of the period.

Stanford carried its momentum into the second quarter when the hosts outscored GW 31-11 to take a 46-30 halftime lead.

Three-pointers by Jones, Chase and sophomore Brianna Cummings midway through the third frame pulled the Colonials within 10 points (51-41) but they would get no closer, as the Cardinal ended the quarter with a 10-4 run for a 61-45 advantage.

Washington scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter but a 12-3 Stanford spurt toward the end of the period sealed the decision.

GW outrebounded Stanford 50-46, including 24-10 on the offensive glass. Jones had seven offensive boards among her 17 rebounds.

Lili Thompson led four Cardinal players in double figures with 21 points, while Erica McCall posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Karlie Samuelson had 17 points with four 3-pointers.

The Colonials continue their road swing 10pm tonight when they visit Fresno State.
