THEY were basketball players locally before they transitioned to the United States, now a pair of Bahamian student athletes are quickly becoming two-sport standouts.

Torei Bowe and Paul Hepburn, currently attending Clear Lake Christian School in Houston, Texas, have made the move to the football gridiron this season for the Eagles.

Although his team has struggled, sophomore Bowe has showed his versatility on the field playing both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Playing linebacker and defensive back, he has notched 24 tackles, forced three fumbles with two fumble recoveries and three passes deflected.

On offence he has carried the ball 17 times for 140 yards and caught three passes for 21 yards.

On special teams, he has returned three kickoffs for 68 yards. He was awarded the Max Preps Player of the game for last month’s matchup against Texas Christian where he finished with 13 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Bowe was recruited as a member of the Frank Rutherford development programme originally as a basketball prospect.

As a freshman with Clear Lake last season, he averaged 14.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.

On the court, Bowe tallied five double doubles and scored 20 or more points in four outings.

Some of his top performances include - 19 points, 15 rebounds and four steals against O’Connell, 23 points and 12 rebounds against Sunnybrook Christian, 24 points and 12 rebounds against Living Stones Christian, 16 points and 11 rebounds against KIPP Sunnyside and 15 points and 10 rebounds against Cristo Rey Jesuit.

Locally, Bowe starred for head coach Mark Hanna and the DW Davis Pitbulls.

On the football field, Hepburn, a senior, has seen time at linebacker and wide receiver. Offensively, he has eight catches for 214 yards and two touchdowns. On the basketball court, Hepburn averaged 8.4 points and a team high 14.9 rebounds per game. His season was highlighted by an 18- point, 16-rebound performance against KIPP Generations College and a 19-point, 17-rebound game against Cristo Rey Jesuit.
