THE third instalment of the BOMAC Cage Fight series was postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Joaquin but the organisation still plans to host an event before the year concludes.

BOMAC “Fight For the Cure,” originally scheduled to be hosted this month, is now re-scheduled for February 20, 2016 and will feature an all-female mixed martial arts card.

This initiative was created to join the universal recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“The third event in the series for BOMAC Cage Fights will be a special. The first annual ‘Fight for the Cure’ celebrates the strong survivors of breast cancer, their friends and families. Part proceeds from this event will go to assist with efforts to educate and empower women,” the organisers said in a statement issued on Facebook.

“Fight for the Cure will be headlined by some of the strongest women in the world, in the most competitive sport in the world. Join us for what could just be our most exciting fight card of the year.

“We know this may disappoint some fans and fighters but we believe this is the right decision for the promotion and the people of the Bahamas.”

Dr Kent Bazard, BOMAC co-ordinator and Empire Mixed Martial Arts founder, unveiled plans for the event during BOMAC 2: The Revenge - hosted at the British Colonial Hilton in August.

The BOMAC 2 card featured the first female MMA cage match in Bahamian history featuring Melanie “Bear Traps” Camden against Gillian “Savage” Robertson.

“We have for the first time, females in the cage. Everyone who knows me knows that I think females are the future of the sport. They are very intense, they train hard and they always have more to show, so their fights tend to be active and more exciting. So, I’m very happy to make history and have females fight here for the first time,” Bazard said.

“We want to see more of this and we are happy to announce an all-female card. It will give greater exposure to our female fighters as that sector continues to grow and at the same time raise awareness during that time of year.”

The “Fight For The Cure” will join several other major sporting initiatives in the breast cancer awareness cause, including Sunshine Insurance Race weekend (Marathon Bahamas and the Susan G Komen Race For the Cure) the Ride for Hope and a number of others.

While that event will be shelved for another few months, the next event on the mixed martial arts calendar will be BOMAC 3: King Of The Ring.

The event is scheduled for December 5 and will feature a one night MMA tournament, with Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing) and Muay Thai fights.
