Canadian tourist killed in garbage truck accident is named

THE Canadian tourist killed in a traffic accident on Baha Mar Boulevard on Monday has been identified as 43–year-old Rong Gu, of New Market, Ontario.

He was struck by a garbage truck and dragged several feet while attempting to cross the street in Cable Beach around 2pm on Monday.

Superintendent Craig Stubbs, officer in charge of the Traffic Division, said the garbage truck lost control and collided with a vehicle before striking the visitor.

“Our information is the garbage truck was travelling east in the southern lane in a dual carriageway on Weat Bay Street when the driver claimed he lost pressure in his brakes as he entered the roundabout,” Supt Stubbs said.

“He tried to slow the vehicle down, but collided with a 2013 Kia Sportage. He then crossed the sidewalk on the northern side and struck a Caucasian male attempting to cross the road. The male received serious injuries to his lower extremities and was pronounced dead on the scene.”

The victim was believed to have been travelling with his family on board a cruise ship, the Carnival Sensation. He was on an island tour at the time of his death.

The driver of the garbage truck is assisting police with their investigations.
