Diners’ Debates. - The School of Social Sciences at the College of the Bahamas is resuming its Diners’ Debates lecture series on Thursday, November 19, at 7pm. The first Diners’ Debate of the 2015/16 academic year will feature presenters William Fielding (Grant Writer and Adjunct Professor for Statistics and Social Research at the College of the Bahamas) and Keisha Ellis (Adjunct Professor in Political Science at the College of the Bahamas). Attendance is free.

On the 2012 campaign trail, Perry Christie observed: “Too many Bahamians are still suffering, living in the dark because they can’t pay their bills, or living in cars because they’ve lost their homes. I know so many Bahamians who worked hard to make it into the middle class – Bahamians who grew up poor but worked hard so they could give a better life to their own children. Yet so many of them today feel like they’re standing over a trap door – one step away from falling back into poverty. For too many, their debts are going up but their incomes are going down. They’re looking at a pile of bills they just can’t pay.”

In 2013, the government of the Bahamas and the Inter-American Development Bank conducted a Household Expenditure survey, which concluded that $3.82 can pay for a “balanced low-cost diet of 2,400 kilocalories a day” in The Bahamas.

William Fielding, who is assisting with the editing of the report, will explain the methodology of this survey, and Keisha Ellis, accompanied by COB students, will share the results of a practical experiment conducted on the basic premise of its findings.

Please note that the venue of the Diners’ Debate has changed, and it is now being hosted at the Black Box Theatre, which is located right behind the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts on Mackey Street. There will be a cash bar and snacks for purchase.
