Conflict of interest

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Quick question: is it not a conflict of interest for a Cabinet minister, who by virtue of his office, is a member of the Bahamas Investment Authority (BIA) - the body responsible for approving and supervising foreign investment in The Bahamas - to have a commercial relationship with a foreign investor in respect of a project currently under the supervision of the BIA?

The Attorney General has already declared that members of her family have a commercial relationship with Baha Mar. And “sip-sip” says that the Prime Minister is in a similar position.

Pray tell: if an employee of a bank and his immediate family are prohibited from purchasing a distressed property being sold by that bank, how is it that our Cabinet ministers and the holder of our highest office (Prime Minister) are held to a lesser standard?

Disgusted is right, and in most first world countries when people are caught out they bow out because there would be criminal ramifications. The Bahamas is not even third world so that is your answer. The Prime Minister is in fact above the law because he appoints the attorney general who would be the person to have him charged. And herself of course.

Many years ago, when as a young man, i used to work at a soda company. We had a promotion going on concerning the collection of a certain type of soda cap, where the first prize was a bicycle. None of the employees nor their immediate family were eligible to participate.---- But those were the good old days, or maybe the prize was too small.

The politicians of the Bahamas are a law unto themselves. It is a fact that they do not obey the law as it pertains to them, I.E. public disclosure. If they blatantly break that law why worry about a little thing called conflict of interest? Also you know they will come up with an alternate understanding as to exactly what conflict of interest is. As the old heads said, "when you lay down with dogs you will get flea's". The Bahamas surely could use a tick dip about now.
