Julia Salome smith dies on eve of 95th birthday

JULIA Salome Smith died of a heart attack at the Freeport home of her son, Fred Smith, QC, in the early hours of Friday, the eve of her 95th birthday.

After a funeral service conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Shirley Street, by Father Kenrick Forbes, on Friday, September 4, at 2pm, Mrs Smith will be buried alongside her beloved husband, Frederick, in the Eastern Cemetery at St Matthew’s Church, across the street from Sacred Heart.

Julia Salome Smith, nee Ghiscion, was born in Madaba, Jordan, on August 29, 1921, to Isaac Ghiscion Richard and Zarife Alomat. Her family lived in Bethlehem, Palestine, moved to France and then Gonaives in Haiti. During her youth she attended Pension Lalue in Port-au-Prince.

She married Frederick Charles Smith, of Nassau, on May 29, 1945, and they lived together in Petionville until they relocated to Nassau in 1965. Her husband died on October 7, 1985.

Mrs Smith is survived by three daughters, Norma Chemaly, of Nassau, Gladys Assali Sydenham Smith and Joyce Goitia Smith, both of Freeport, and one son, Frederick Smith, QC, also of Freeport.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
