Parents and their children

EDITOR, The Tribune

So, single parents (mainly women), now we know that we must take responsibility for much of the increase in crime for bad parenting. Never mind that many of us (some with husbands) have worked hard to maintain the children and spent long hours teaching them the basics of right and wrong and good manners and ensured that they did their homework and studied to better themselves.

However, since it has been determined that parents must take responsibility for the criminal acts of their minor children, the question then arises must the state take responsibility for the criminal acts of all for the following reasons:

1 Providing sub standard education which qualifies citizens for neither the work force nor entrepreneurship.

2 Not providing a vibrant or semi-vibrant economy in which people can prosper or at least earn a living.

3 Not providing adequate facilities and activities for the young and not so young citizens to enjoy their time off without having to spend a fortune.

4 Not providing the kind of moral responsibility which would encourage minors to follow good rather than evil.

5 Granting great incentives to foreigners but making it very difficult for Bahamian investors, especially if they wear the wrong political colour, to get incentives to enable them to get developments off the ground.

6 Distributing entitlement cheques with no way to cash them.

PS: Memo to Dr Minnis. Acknowledge, apologise and move on.

the bottom line is and will always be, that parents are responsible for their children. and not the state. It is beyond my understanding why Jeanne Thompson will try to compare this in this manner. It is true that education is not common sense. But then again mean spirits take over to often.
