The Charles W Saunders Cougars and Queen’s College Comets will have to wait another day to determine the outcome of their Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) senior girls’ softball game.

The two teams, matching identical 1-1 win-loss records, clashed yesterday at Charles W Saunders. But before the game could be decided, the rain came pouring down with the Comets holding onto a slim 9-8 lead with the Cougars batting with two out and runners on second and first.

The game would have been official after the third, but the score was tied at 5-5.

Plate umpire Roosevelt Archer tried to get the game completed before the rain started to pour, but after Queen’s College pitcher Dawayna Pratt threw a ball that rolled on the ground to Charles W Saunders’ Bridonte Dean, scoring Megan Grant from third on a wild pitch, it was quite evident that the game could not continue.

Whenever the game will continue, Lockhart will be at the plate with a 1-1 count, while Tyler Carter and Brittney Lockhart will be on second and first respectively.

The game was a keenly contested one that was tied at 3-3 at the end of the first inning.

The Comets drew first blood as Q Albury ripped a run-producing triple to score Lourdes Strachan from first on her lead off walk.

Albury then scored on an error that placed Charisma Taylor on first. After stealing second and third, Albury came home on Chrystin Sawyer’s one-out RBI ground out.

With their fans cheering for them, the Cougars responded in the bottom of the frame as Keneisha Kelly, Megan Grant and Brittney Lockhart all got on base on free passes and eventually scored on wild pitches.

Queen’s College would go ahead 4-3 in the second, thanks to Strachan’s RBI ground that drove home Anissa Evans, who was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. They added their fifth run in the third with two out as Pataria Symonette got hit by a pitch, stole second and third and came home on an error.

After getting retired in order as Pratt struck out the side in the second, Charles W Saunders tacked on two more runs of their own for a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the third. Keneisha Kelly led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Megan Grant’s RBI single. With two out, Lockhart walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

In the fourth, the Comets went ahead 9-5 with four consecutive runs.

Lourdes Strachan led off with a single and she scored along with Albury, Taylor and Pratt, who ended the run with a RBI double.

And before the rain came down, the Cougars got a run from Crystal Symonette, Keneisha Kelly and Megan Grant with two runners left stranded as the game was halted.
