The vacation rental business is the largest driver of Eleuthera’s economy, with the island’s Chamber of Commerce president estimating that 70 per cent of visitors come from the North American market.

Thomas Sands, speaking at a press conference to announce this year’s Eleuthera Business Outlook, which will be held at the Valentine’s Resort and Marina on Harbour Island, said the number of European visitors to the island has been growing.

He added that the Luis Sarmienti-led group, the Four Seasons developer, sees potential from the South American market as well.

Mr Sands added that online sites have played a significant part in helping to drive vacation rental business to Eleuthera.

“This technology has allowed us to open up the destination. The vacation rental business has evolved over the last 10 years where the quality of product being offered is comparable to the rest of the world. In order to compete in that market the product that is being built has to be to that standard,” said Mr Sands.

“These persons who rent vacation homes rent cars, they buy food, they want to exercise and they want to go boating, snorkelling and see the beaches.

“It has, especially over the last couple of months, brought a level of vitality to the Eleuthera economy. It means that we have to continue to improve the product, the delivery of service and embrace technology.”
