The US Embassy, through the US Department of State, sponsored a subregional International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) professional exchange focused on “Combating Corruption” from March 6-16, 2016.

Justice Bernard Turner, of the Supreme Court, and Tribune reporter Khrisna Virgil represented the Bahamas in the programme. Other countries represented included Guyana, Jamaica, and Suriname.

On March 31, Justice Turner and Ms Virgil paid a courtesy call on US Chargé d’Affaires Lisa Johnson at the US Embassy to discuss their participation in the programme.

During the exchange, the participants visited Washington, DC; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Raleigh, North Carolina. They explored the vital role of public/private partnerships and media in supporting good governance and discouraging corruption; examined the dynamics of political campaign financing and government procurement; learned best practices combating corruption; and looked at the mechanisms that enable citizens to foster good governance, ethical standards, and accountability at the local, state, and federal levels.

We need some instruction in this country as to what a real leader is. At this time The Bahamas is a parched land and withering on the vine due to our lack of true, honest, balanced, leadership. Today the political elite who are at the forefront of our country are lacking in basic leadership, honesty, morals, and ethics. This same political elite, are parasites upon our land, they sure do take, but the nation receives little to nothing except, ineptitude, mismanagement, corrupt practices, contempt, lawlessness, and in general a flippant attempt at some sort of standard of morals and ethics. In short, this same political elite is the cancer that is killing our country. Please show one Bahamian what it takes to be a real leader of a nation.
