Jonquel Jones named honourable mention All-American for the second straight year

GEORGE Washington Colonials women’s basketball senior Jonquel Jones was named an honourable mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for the second year in a row, the organisation announced during the 2016 NCAA Women’s Final Four Super Saturday festivities at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Jones, who also received All-America honourable mention from the Associated Press last week, is the third two-time Coaches’ All-American in programme history, joining Tajama Abraham (1996, 1997) and Noelia Gomez (1998, 1999).Darlene Saar (1993), Cathy Joens (2004), Anna Montañana (2005) and Kimberly Beck (2008) each received the distinction once in their careers.

Jones is the nation’s leading rebounder (14.6 rpg) and ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring (16.2 ppg) and second in blocked shots (3.3 bpg). The only player in the conference to average a double-double for the third straight season, she registered 18 double-doubles in 23 games played and finished her career with 54 in 84 games. Despite missing 10 games with an injury, the 6-6 forward’s 336 rebounds on the year ranked as the third-highest single-season total in programme history after she set the mark at 375 a year ago. She also set GW’s single-game rebounding record with 26 boards against No. 25/21 Iowa on November 27, 2015.

The 2015 Atlantic 10 Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Jones is a three-time all-conference selection and two-time all-defensive team honouree. She is the third Colonial ever with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocks and concludes her outstanding career ranking third all-time at GW in rebounds (961), fourth in scoring (15.4 ppg), fifth in blocked shots (177) and 23rd in points (1,171). Including her time at Clemson as a freshman, Jones is one of 18 active players in Division I with at least 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career (1,249 and 1,041).

The native of Freeport, Bahamas, was named to the Senior CLASS Award’s Senior All-America Second Team last week, and she has also been named to watch lists for a number of national player of the year awards, including the Wade Trophy, the Naismith Trophy, the John R. Wooden Award and the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.

Jones led the Colonials to back-to-back Atlantic 10 titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in her final two seasons in Foggy Bottom, earning A-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player honours in 2015 and a spot on the 2016 All-Tournament Team.
