Sign of the times?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I sent you a letter on the Island Luck signs at Montagu a few days ago. The letter hasn’t been published, but lo and behold the oversized billboards have magically disappeared.

Perhaps proof that Big Brother is reading our email. Apparently their parents neglected to tell them it’s bad manners to read other people’s mail.

Following is the letter to which this writer refers. It was sent to The Tribune on April 4, but because of the volume of letters awaiting publication it had not been published. Said the writer on April 4:

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Now that Island Luck has launched its three-ball lottery at South West Plaza, perhaps Mr Sebas Bastian would be kind enough to remove the oversized billboards that are ghettoizing the Montagu Park area?

Last December, Environment and Housing Minister Kenred Dorsett said the display of road side signs would be regularized and in January, the government made a big deal about what was supposed to be a crackdown against billboards.

Shortly afterwards, Island Luck erected the oversized billboards, which cheapens the entire area.

Property ownership does not give anyone the automatic right to post signs. An application is supposed to be made and the authorities are then supposed to decide on the suitability of the signage. Surely, these huge billboards are not suitable for one of the few public beach areas still available for family recreation?

This visual assault on the environment is not in keeping with Mr. Dorsett’s promise to clean up the terrible billboard eyesore.

Said Mr Dorsett: “It is also a safety measure as these signs can be distracting to drivers and pedestrians alike. It is also a part of the clean-up initiative of the (Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches Authority).”

What happened to this concern over road safety?

Come on, Mr. Dorsett. Do your job!

Sorry, but who is Mr. Dorsett? I know not of the name you speak.
