This past month has seen members of the Anglican Church Women (ACW) of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Island engage in several community-oriented initiatives. 

The ACW is an organisation of committed and faithful women with one common goal – to put Jesus Christ on display with their acts of kindness and love towards people. 

The organisation aims to exercise ministry and provide true stewardship within its parishes, the Diocese and throughout the world. To this end, members responded to a call of assistance after Hurricane Matthew left devastation in its wake across the Bahamas. “We recognised the devastation suffered by our brothers and sisters. We immediately brainstormed how we may assist in some tangible way. We first reached out to the Bahamas Red Cross back in October to pack as many grocery boxes as they had available. We noted that food and water were being given but less so toiletries,” said ACW President Yvette Barr.

Earlier this month, the ACW then took their generosity to Andros, donating to those still recovering from the storm. The charitable initiative ended with a special church service. 

“We went door-to-door in North Andros giving care bags to our sisters affected by the hurricane. Then we worshipped at St Margaret’s Anglican Church, Nichols Town, Andros, with our sisters,” said Ms Barr.

“It was a humbling experience. Ladies were touched that we chose not only to give care bags but to come out and see the damage which they sustained.  As their president I assured them, on behalf of our council, that we are truly concerned about them. As sisters, if one is affected, we are all affected. We give thanks to the Almighty God that we were able to assist them. We assured them of our continued prayers and support as they try to rebuild their lives.”

For 2017, the ACW hope to intensify their service to God, share God’s words and love with others, make Christ known throughout the Diocese and the world, and foster discipline through worship, study and a more fervent prayer life.
