No confidence over election?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Tall Pines MP Leslie Miller’s suggestion that Prime Minister Perry Christie should call a snap election in either June or July lends the impression that he isn’t confident at all that the PLP can take on an invigorated, cohesive FNM.

At least Miller cannot be rightly accused of having an overweening confidence in his government’s performance thus far, even with the dishevelled state of the FNM.

Miller seems to have more confidence in the FNM’s ability to solidify itself heading into 2017, than the anti-Minnis faction within the party.

All things considered, Miller’s unsolicited recommendation has a potentially dangerous ramification for Christie and the PLP.

I don’t care how feeble the FNM is perceived to be, with an electorate composed of thousands of capricious, undecided voters, the coming election, whether snap or otherwise, will be a toss up.

It is certainly not out of the realm of possibility that the PLP, notwithstanding it implementing VAT, NHI, BAMSI, Junkanoo Carnival and the Social Services Debit Card, can lose the election, considering the fact that incumbents are mostly unpopular during the election period.

Conversely, it is not out of the realm of impossibility for the PLP to win, and by a large margin.

Either way, the safe bet for Christie is to fulfil his constitutionally allotted tenure of five years.

The remaining 15 months  between now and  May 2017 could very well be the final 15 months of his current administration.

Christie should take full advantage of the tenure afforded him by the constitution.

A snap election this year would be tantamount to playing Russian roulette from a political standpoint.
