After bringing an end to the country’s longest winning streak in high school sports last year, the Queen’s College Comets are looking to start a streak of their own.

The Comets’ quest for a second consecutive Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) Track and Field Championship got off to a promising start and they lead the standings following day one.

They posted 462 points and top four of the eight contested divisions, but remain just 28 points ahead of the St. Augustine’s Big Red Machine who posted 434 points. SAC holds leads in the four remaining divisions.

The St Anne’s Blue Waves currently sit in third with 109 points, the St John’s College Giants are fourth with 100 points and the NCA Crusaders round out the top five with 77 points.

QC’s Charisma Taylor was the lone record breaker on the day with her performance in the Senior Girls 100m hurdles. She finished in 14.45secs to surpass Krytal Bodie’s eight-year-old record of 14.47secs.

Other top performers for the Comets’ included Kendrick Taylor, who took first place in the Junior Boys 400m (53.38secs) and 1500m (5:00.12secs), and Lavardo Handfield who finished second in both the Senior Boys 400m (51.47secs) and Long Jump (6.53m).

SAC’s Doniesha Anderson, one of the most versatile athletes in the country, easily took first place in the Senior Girls 400m (58.81secs) and high jump (1.60m).

QC leads the Intermediate Girls along with the Bantam, Junior and Senior Boys. Their Senior Boys were the high point scorers on day one with 78 points as SAC trails with 56. The Junior Boys posted 74 points, again followed by SAC with 58 points and the Intermediate Girls lead their division with 73 points, ahead of the Big Red Machine’s 47.

SAC’s most productive division was the Intermediate Boys with 68 points, followed by the Comets with 42.

The Junior Boys and Senior Girls divisions have been the most closely contested thus far with just a combined total of five points separating the two schools at the top. SAC leads both the Senior Girls (with 69 points while QC posted 67) and the Junior Boys (with 55 points while QC posted 52).

At last year’s meet, the Comets posted 460 points on day one – 62 points ahead of the Big Red Machine who scored 398.

The three-day meet continues today at the original Thomas A. Robinson stadium.
