SIR Sidney Poitier, 88, accepted a lifetime achievement award by video link from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards on Sunday night.

According to the BBC, Sir Sidney did not travel to London, England to accept the BAFTA Fellowship in person due to his health. The BBC reported that the actor’s doctors advised that he “refrain from transatlantic travel at this time.”

However, American actor Jamie Foxx presented Sir Sidney with the award at his home in Los Angeles, California.

“Today my cup runneth over because I am here with my daughter and the future filmmakers of the world in celebration of this wonderful art form,” Sir Sidney told the BAFTA audience by video.

“To my family, my life force, I am nothing without you. And all of you, thank you for your warm embrace and this extraordinary moment and memory I shall cherish.”

Sir Sidney, born in Florida to Bahamian parents, spent his early life in Cat Island before relocating to the United States, where he later launched an acting career. He became the first black man to win an Academy Award.
