Wins for Caribs and Stingers as regular season returns

AFTER an exciting All-Star weekend, the New Providence Basketball Association returned to its regular season action on Monday night at the AF Adderley Gymnasium as the College of the Bahamas Caribs and the PJ Stingers picked up victories.

While the Caribs knocked off the Pirates 86-81, the Stingers prevailed in a 108-104 triumph over the Englerston Elites.

Kemsy Sylvestre, who was named to the All-Star Classic but didn’t participate, came off the bench and ignited the College of the Bahamas (COB) with 22 points, two rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes and 13 seconds. He was 10-for-15 from the field and 2-for-3 from the free throw line.

Alvano Laing also came of the bench and scored 14 points and 10 rebounds; Ramon Dames had 13 points and seven rebounds; Justin Smith had 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists; All-Star Justin Munroe contributed seven points and five rebounds; slam dunk champion Brian Jennings had seven points and four rebounds and All-Star replacement Jason Stubbs added seven points.

For the Pirates, Terrance Brown led the attack with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes.

Kronoff Dean had 14 points, four assists and three rebounds; All-Star and slam dunk competitor Tevin Hudson had nine points, six rebounds and six assists; Donathan Johnson had nine points and four rebounds and Jemington Johnson added eight points and three rebounds.

COB led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter, held onto a 38-34 advantge at the half and stayed ahead 64-61 after three quarters.

They went on to outscore the Pirates 22-20 in the fourth to secure the win.

The Caribs won the battle on the boards 45-40 and made 28 turnovers, compared to 21 by the Pirates.

All-Star Devon Ferguson stepped up with 18 points, six assists and two rebounds in playing 25 minutes and 50 seconds to lead the PJs.

He connected on 6-of-11 shots from the field, was 0-for-4 from the three-point line but 6-for-10 from the foul line.

Trevor Smith helped out with 17 points and two rebounds off the bench; Vernon Stubbs also came off the bench and scored 14 points with seven rebounds; All-Star Randy Williams had 13 points and three rebounds off the bench as well, as did Jervonne Atkins with nine points, while Tavares Roker had nine points and two assists; Dion McPhee had eight points, nine rebounds and three assists and both Kendrick Curry and Garvin Scavella chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.

All-Star Dario McKenzie led the Elites with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists; All-Star Brandon Stubbs had 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds; Rashad Dean had 21 points and three rebounds; Tario McKenzie had 14 points and three assists; Teneas Mackey had 12 points and Philip Outten had seven points and six rebounds.

The Stingers took a slim 26-23 lead at the end of the first quarter that they extended to 57-45 at the half.

At the end of the third, they held a 77-70 lead and they went on to hold off the Elites in the fourth quarter despite being outscored 34-31.

PJs had a 39-32 rebounding advantage and made 28 turnovers, while the Elites only had 21.
