Bahamas Harvest Church. - On January 27, more than 350 students attended a workshop titled “Effectively preparing for the ACT” at Bahamas Harvest Church. The ACT test is a university admissions test required of students by universities around the world when evaluating applicants to their undergraduate programs. The ACT is accepted for admissions by the College of The Bahamas, all four-year universities in the United States, and more than 200 other universities around the world. Erica Hepburn (ACT International Consultant) educated students on the multiple-choice questions test format:

English - 75 questions, 45 minutes; Mathematics - 60 questions, 60 minutes; Reading - 40 questions, 35 minutes; Science - 40 questions, 35 minutes; plus an optional Writing Test 1 prompt essay, 40 minutes.

Listed below are some of the key pointers Erica Hepburn gave to students:

• The ACT provides scores based on the number of correct answers-with no deduction for incorrect answers.

• The ACT measures Science and higher-level math skills-an advantage for students interested in studying in these fields.

• The ACT offers an optional writing test.

• If you take the test more than once, you choose which test date results to send to the schools of your choice.

The goal of the seminar was to give students a heightened awareness that the ACT is the admissions test taken by the majority of the high school graduating class in the United States and is a viable exam.

The ACT is currently offered on multiple test dates in Nassau, Freeport, Eleuthera, and Abaco.

Students can find those test dates at www.actstudent.org/intl.

Erica Hepburn closed the workshop by informing students that it is common for students to take both the ACT and the SAT and submit the highest score to colleges and universities. ACT scores can be used for many scholarship applications.
