Sigmund ‘Bud’ Pritchard

A MEMORIAL service will be held for Sigmund “Bud” Pritchard at 6pm today at St Andrew’s Presyterian Kirk. Mr Pritchard died at his home in Nassau on Thursday after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.

Sigmund Ambrose Pritchard was born in Nassau in 1929 to Asa and Maud Pritchard. His father, Sir Asa, was a former Speaker of the House of Assembly. In 1929 Sir Asa launched an English-style tobacco shop that grew into today’s John Bull Group of Companies, spanning four generations of the family.

After school Sigmund Pritchard managed the John Bull Tobacco Company, later going into his own business when he opened the United Bookstores.

He served one year on the Constitution Committee and on the Bahamas Olympic Committee for many years. In 1960 he represented the Bahamas in sailing at the Rome Olympics. He later entered politics, but was unsuccessful as an independent candidate for Eleuthera in 1967.

Mr Pritchard, who was predeceased by his wife Marjory (Hunt) Pritchard, and his sister Macushla Hazelwood, is survived by his second wife, Nancy Mahaffy Pritchard, his brother, Emmett, and sister Sally Hazelwood, his daughters Sandra Kemp and her husband, Ian, Leslie-Anne Dexter (Ron Wall) and son, Myles Pritchard and his wife Jody. He is also survived by his grandchildren Heather-Anne, Jessica, Andrew, Aaron, Amy, Tyler and Dylan, and great grandson Grayson. Mr Pritchard attended Upper Canada College and spent many happy years living at 35 St Edmunds Drive in Toronto. He was a sports enthusiast, an avid skier and spent blissful days on his boat surrounded by those who loved him.

“Bud touched the lives of many,” said a member of his family, “and will be greatly missed by his countless friends and all those that were an integral part of his life”.

The family thanked his caregivers, Bing, Christie, Gladys, Jane, Chi and Clint “for their compassion and care”. Instead of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to The Cancer Society of the Bahamas: Caring Centre Building Fund.

Like so many like him, he fled (in this case to Toronto) and got the last laugh on Ping, Ingraham and Christie! Good for him.....can only wish the rest of us could be so lucky!
