Six arrested in swoops on nightclubs

A special operation, led by officers from the Selective Enforcement Team, intensified on the weekend with the arrest of six persons for various criminal offences and the closure of several clubs for business and liquor licence violations.

The operation, which targeted a number of nightclubs suspected of operating in breach of the law, took place between late Saturday and early Sunday.

Seven nightclubs located at West Bay Street, Arundel Street, Tonique Williams-Darling Highway, Nassau Street and Elizabeth Avenue were closed down for operating in breach of the Liquor Licence Act.

Three nightclubs, located at East Bay Street, Palm Tree Avenue and Faith Avenue South, were closed down for operating in breach of the Business License Act.

Six individuals were also arrested for questioning in connection with several criminal offences, including firearm possession, threats of death, possession of dangerous drugs and attempted murder.

According to police, the closure of the nightclubs was designed to send a clear message to nightclub owners that officers will not tolerate them operating in breach of the law.

Police are urging nightclub owners to ensure they operate in the confines of the law and that their business licences are current and placed in clear sight for inspection, as police will continue to enforce the law.
