A CELEBRATORY dinner in honour of legendary Bahamian actor Sir Sidney Poitier being awarded the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Fellowship Award and his 89th birthday was held at the Wilshire Four Seasons in Beverly Hills on Sunday.

The event was hosted by Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, Paulette Zonicle, and Bahamas Honorary Consul to California Cedric Scott.

The BAFTA Fellowship Award is the highest honour given by the academy and is awarded to individuals in recognition of outstanding and exceptional contributions to film and television.

Sir Sidney was also presented with an oil painting by Jamal Rolle, aka The Celebrity Artist and Tribune cartoonist, of “Two Parrots”, the symbol of Cat Island, the actor’s home island.

Mr Mitchell introduced the young Bahamian singer Angelique Sabrina, who serenaded Sir Sidney with the theme song from one of his most famous films, “To Sir With Love”.

In attendance at the dinner were Sir Sidney’s daughters, Beverly Poitier-Henderson and Pamela Poitier, Dr Connie Wilson, Yuki Morita-Scott and Mr and Mrs Gregg White. The members of the Bahamas-California Committee - Jackie Edwards, Sam McIntosh, Kevin King, Kimberly King-Burns and her husband, Prescott Young, Travolta Cooper, Paula Lauren Gibson, Annette Goodparker and Mr and Mrs Amalaye Oyake - were also there.
