A FORMER policeman appeared in Magistrates Court on Friday facing kidnapping and rape charges which could see him facing life imprisonment if convicted at trial.

D’Andre Rigby, 23, of Millennium Gardens, stood before Magistrates Andrew Forbes accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a woman on January 5. The women was allegedly taken from Carmichael Road to a remote location in western New Providence where the alleged assault occurred.

Magistrate Forbes informed the former constable that the offences were indictable and that he would not be allowed to enter a plea to the allegations until his formal arraignment in Supreme Court. Rigby is set to return to Magistrates Court on April 4, when the case will be transferred to Supreme Court.

As the magistrate did not have jurisdiction to consider bail, Rigby was remanded to the Department of Correctional Services to await trial but was made aware of his right to apply to the Supreme Court for a bond. A special note was made for prison authorities concerning Rigby’s security given his most recent occupation.
