A MAN was found dead near St Mary’s Hall on St Augustine’s College campus yesterday morning.

The Tribune understands that the man was found dead shortly after 8am by a passer-by, who initially thought he was resting.

Police later told The Tribune that foul play was not suspected, but said it was likely that the man collapsed as a result of health complications while exercising.

When The Tribune arrived on the scene, the body of the deceased could be seen slumped over on his right side. Near his body was a stick police said the man carried with him while walking, as well as two dogs The Tribune understands always accompanied him while exercising in the area.

The passer-by, who spoke to The Tribune but wished to remain anonymous, said he arrived at St Mary’s Hall around 8.20am yesterday morning to exercise. Shortly afterwards he said the presence of the two familiar dogs caused him to notice the deceased laying nearby.

“At first I thought he was resting, so I put my hand on him, tried to shake him,” the passer-by said. “I said ‘sir, sir, you all right?’ I didn’t get a response. Tried to feel for a pulse on his neck, didn’t feel nothing. I put my hand on his stomach to see if he was breathing, feel nothing. Tried to feel the pulse on his wrist, didn’t feel nothing.”

The passer-by said he then called out for the area’s caretaker for assistance, but got no response.

“He didn’t hear me so I immediately dialed 911 and I came back and I stayed with the body.”

The passerby added: “He probably comes around once in a while. I just saw him on Monday. I just shook his hand.”
