Roberts and the Bible

EDITOR, The Tribune.

In The Nassau Guardian, published January 21, PLP Chair Bradley Roberts, in taking potshots at PLP defectors Renward Wells and Dr Andre Rollins, referenced the New Testament account of Jesus, His disciples and His betrayal for silver. Roberts stated ‘‘if Jesus Himself, spotless and blameless as He was, could be betrayed and sold out for 40 pieces of silver and a fatal kiss, how much more vulnerable and susceptible are we as mere mortal men and women?’

’ Roberts also stated that ‘‘Jesus chose as much as 40 disciples and when the field was narrowed down to 12, there was still a Judas.’’

Roberts presents himself as a suave politician with a truculent demeanour. He is smart in the discipline of politics, the Whistleblower is willing to concede. However, his knowledge of the Bible is insufficient. For Roberts’ information, Jesus was not betrayed for 40 pieces of silver; rather, it was 30 pieces of silver Judas Iscariot betrayed Him for. If Roberts doesn’t believe the Whistleblower, all he has to do is to look up Matthew 26:15; 27:3 and Zechariah 11:12.

Anyone with a minimal working knowledge of the Bible would know the exact amount Jesus was betrayed for, as the story of His betrayal is read ad nauseam during the Easter holiday.

As for Jesus choosing 40 disciples, Roberts is once again exposing his biblical illiteracy for the entire Bahamas to see. Had Roberts done his research, he would have known that Jesus had at the minimum 84 disciples, not including the women, such as Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Susanna, who played key roles in His ministry.

According to Luke chapters nine and 10, there were 84 disciples. Granted, the 72 mentioned in Luke 10 were not explicitly called disciples; nonetheless, one can still deduce that they were, based on their relationship to Jesus and the fact that they played active roles in His ministry. Roberts seems to have a fondness for the number 40.

As a Catholic though, he should know better than to misquote the holy Bible, particularly when taking potshots at his political rivals.
