HIGH JUMPERS

IN SLOVAKIA

THE first leg of the new International High Jump Tour in Banska Bystrica, scheduled for February 4, will have all three top Italians jumping and two Bahamians.

National record holder Gianmarco Tamberi, current world leader Marco Fassinotti and European indoor medallist Silvano Chesani will compete against two world champions, from 2007 Donald Thomas of the Bahamas and from 2011, Jesse Williams of the US.

Also entered are Briton Robbie Grabarz, an Olympic medallist in 2012 and Trevor Barry of the Bahamas, who was world medallist in 2011, along with Czech’s Jaroslav Baba, a finalist last year at World Champs and European Indoors. They will all compete on the tour for the $5,000 USD for the winner. The second leg will be in Trinec on February 7 and will have some top additions such as European medallist 2014 Andriy Protsenko from Ukraine (240 PB) and Poland´s 2009 world medallist Sylwester Bednarek.

BAISS POSTSEASON

THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools has completed its basketball regular season and is now set to start their playoffs at the Kendal Isaacs Gym this week.

In the senior boys’ division, the Jordan Prince Williams Falcons captured the pennant and they were followed by the Queen’s College Comets, St John’s Giants and Aquinas College Aces.

In the senior girls’ division, the Jordan Prince Williams Falcons captured the pennant. Charles W Saunders got second place, St Johns Giants were third and St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine came in fourth.

In the junior boys’ division, the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine won the pennant. The Jordan Prince Williams Falcons were second, the St Johns College Giants were third and the Aquinas College Aces came in fourth.

And in the junior girls’ division, the Queens College Comets won the pennant, the Kingsway Academy Saints were second, the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine third and the Jordan Prince Williams Falcons came in fourth.

The BAISS is all set to get started today with the sudden death playoffs starting at 4pm.

• Here’s how the match-ups go with the pennant winners taking on the fourth seeds in all divisions:

Queens College vs Jordan Prince Williams (Jr Girls); Jordan Prince Williams vs St Augustine’s College (Sr Girls), St Augustine’s College vs Aquinas College (Jr Boys) and Jordan Prince Williams vs Aquinas College (Sr Boys).

On Tuesday, the second seeds will play the third seeds. Their match-ups are as follows:

Kingsway Academy vs St Augustine’s College (Jr Girls), Charles W Saunders vs St Johns College (Sr Girls), Jordan Prince Williams vs St John’s College (Jr Boys) and Queen’s College vs St John’s College (Sr Boys).

The best-of-three championships will start on Wednesday and continue on Thursday. If necessary, the third and deciding games will be played on Saturday. They will play in the same order as they did in the playoffs starting with the junior girls, then senior girls, junior boys and wrap up with the senior boys.

CAT ISLAND

FUND RAISER

THE inaugural Godfrey Kelly Class C Cat Island Regatta is scheduled to begin at noon this weekend in Montagu Bay.

Some of the top C Class boats confirmed to compete are the Dream Girl, Sweet Island Gal, Jacob’s Ladder and the Witty K. The regatta is being used as a Cat Island Sailing Club fundraiser. Entertainment will be provided by the Genesis Warhawks Junkanoo Group and DJ Golddigger.

“All Cat Islanders, descendants of Cat Island and friends of Cat Island are invited to Montagu this weekend,” president Pat Strachan said. “This is our first fundraiser for the year. And we will have the best entertainment, competitive sloop sailing and great tasting food available. “This year, we are celebrating our 60th Annual Regatta. Our regatta is the second oldest in the country to the National Family Island Regatta. And we are proud of that accomplishment. We are honouring our co-founder Godfrey Kelly this year. It was in 1956 when Godfrey Kelly and Harold Christie held the first Cat Island Regatta.”

The 60th Annual Cat Island Regatta is scheduled for July 29 to August 1 in New Bight, Cat Island.

BGF TRIALS

THE Bahamas Federation of Amateur Bowlers hosted its trials for the 2016 Bahamas national training squad and the following bowlers were selected based on their total pin fall:

Men - David Slatter, Sonith Lockhart, Lee Davis, Derrick Burrows (new), LaSheikh Major (new), Kelsey Rolle (new), Ritchie Pyfrom and Byron McClain.

Women - Driskell Rolle, Janice Hoyte, Jonice (Joy) Lockhart, Xynea Johnson, Marina McClain, Kayla Nixon, Joanne Powell and Tara Johnson.

Out of this field, the federation will determine who goes on to represent the Bahamas at the various international tournaments this year.

BOXING SHOW

CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club is scheduled to present its ‘Back on Track’ amateur boxing show 7pm January 30 at the Wulff Road Boxing Square.

The event will showcase amateur boxing teams from New Providence and across the Bahamas. All amateur boxing clubs are invited to participate.

Special recognition will be given to Lennox Boyce, Champion Amateur Boxing Club’s 2015 Amateur Boxer of the Year.
