THE BAISS basketball playoffs got underway yesterday in the sudden death playoff round with the top seed in the junior girls’ division advancing to the finals.

The Queen’s College Comets came in as the No.1 seed and looked every but the part with a 32-19 win over the No.4 seeded Jordan Prince William Falcons at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium yesterday.

Aisja Strachan led the Comets with a game high 16 points, while Tyler Lightbourne added 11 and Ramona Hanna chipped in with six.

Brianna Stevens led the Falcons with 14 points and Nicolette Godfrey finished with four.

The Comets scored off the opening tip on a Lightbourne layup and led wire-to-wire in the win.

After a slow paced first quarter which the Comets won 6-4, scoring picked up for both teams in the second.

Stevens came out more offensive minded in the second and tied the game for the Falcons early on a putback layup.

The Comets immediately responded with a 7-0 run sparked by a three pointer from Stevens. She was followed by layups from Lightbourne and Hanna on the run.

A pair of free throws eventually pushed the lead to 17-8 with just over a minute left to play. The Comets led 19-8 at the half.

In the third, the Falcons trailed by as much as 11 before putting together a rally sparked by Stevens and Godfrey.

The foul prone quarter took nearly 20 minutes to complete and the Falcons got as close as six before the Comets pulled away late. They took a 23-17 lead into the fourth.

Five straight points from the Comets in the fourth quarter put them up by double figures (28-17) with just over four minutes to go and put the game away for good.

The Comets will go on to face the winners of the Kingsway and St Augustine’s matchup in the best-of-three championship series. They look to rebound from last year’s championship series when they were swept by the Kingsway Academy Saints in two games.
