THREE people were killed in a single day on Tuesday in Nassau, with the latest murder involving a late night double fatal shooting.

Police are probing the double homicide of two men at Yellow Elder Gardens after armed men ambushed the home the victims shared, firing multiple gunshots with a high-powered weapon.

According to Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle, the incident happened shortly after 9pm on Eaton Street. He said when one of the men awoke to answer knocks at the door, the gunmen opened fire and gained entry to the house, killing the first victim in a hail of bullets.

While police have not officially released their identities, The Tribune understands they are Omar Kelly and Romel Rolle. Both men are in their late 40s, police confirmed. Mr Rolle added that one of the men was wearing an ankle-monitoring bracelet.

“Shortly after 9pm, the two men were at home when two persons came to the house and knocked on the door,” the Central Detective Unit Chief said. “The owner of the house got up to answer the door and before he was able to open, the gunmen discharged shots into the door.

“They fired using a high-powered weapon and he was struck. They also got the door open and entered.

“A second male who was in the house attempted to run upstairs and he was shot in the back. He made it upstairs where he collapsed.”

Emergency Medical Services pronounced the men dead on the scene, Mr Rolle said. Both assailants then ran heading south, police believe, across Tonique Williams Darling Highway.

Mr Rolle said the families of both victims were also at the home during the shooting, but none of them was harmed.

In another incident, an elderly man was stabbed multiple times and killed during a home invasion in his apartment early on Tuesday morning.

The murder took the homicide count to eight for the 26 days of this month, according to The Tribune’s records.

Chief Superintendent Rolle said the 65-year-old victim was found in a bathtub filled with water, with multiple wounds in his upper body.

“Shortly after 5am, police responded to a call from a concerned citizen that an apartment complex through Churchill Street off Soldier Road was being robbed,” Supt Rolle said.

“When officers arrived on the scene, they met the door to one of the apartment units open. Officers checked inside and while checking the premises discovered the homeowner in a bathtub filled with water. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.

“The victim sustained injuries to his upper body that we suspect was from a knife. We are investigating the incident as a homicide. The apartment appeared to have been ransacked and searched and several items were missing. The person that called also told officers they observed persons leaving with a television in his hands.”

Chief Supt Rolle said police arrested a man shortly after 7am in connection with this incident. On Tuesday night, police said they were looking for two other suspects.

Police have not officially identified the victim, but Chief Supt Rolle said he was an elderly man who lived alone.

These killings came less than 24 hours after a man was shot and killed in Freeport, becoming Grand Bahama’s first homicide of the year.
