JUNIOR FED CUP

TEAMS SHINNING

THE Bahamas Junior Fed Cup team, coached by Bradley Bain, defeated El Salvador 3-0 yesterday in Santo Dominigo.

Sierra Donaldson and Sydney Clarke were both successful in their singles matches, while Donaldson and Africa Smith won in doubles.

The team is now 2-0 in ties with a 5-1 record in matches. The team will play Puerto Rico today for the top seed position in the main draw on Thursday.

The boys Jr Davis Cup team, coached by Ceron Rolle, defeated Jamaica 2-1 in their first match on Monday. Kofi Bowe lost his singles, but Donte Armbrister won his match. In the pivotal doubles, Armbrister and Bowe teamed up to win.

The Bahamas was scheduled to play No.2 seeds Aruba in their second match yesterday, but no results were available up to press time last night.

TENNIS

MAJOR INTO MAIN

AFTER advancing out of the qualifying round of the Turkey F4 Futures in Antalya, Turkey, over the weekend, Philip Major got eliminated in the first round of the main draw on Tuesday.

Major lost to Mert Zincirli of Turkey 7-6 (4), 6-1.

In the first round of qualifying, Major defeated Matteo Vialmin from Switzerland  6-0 4-6 6-4.  Major advanced to the second round where he got a walkover against Ergeneman from Turkey.  Major then knocked off Pavel Nejedly of the Czech Republic 7-5 6-2.

Joshua Turnquest also participated in the tournament, but lost to Quentin Coulard of France 6-1, 6-2.

Philip must continue his excellent play as he faces Anil Yuksel from Turkey tomorrow in the 1st Round of the Main Draw.  The main draw will be played January 26-31 2016.

CITY BOWLING

LEAGUE

THE Most Valuable Player in City Bowling League competition on Monday night was Lee Davis of the Ten Back Strikers who toppled the pins for a 227 high game and a 604 high three game set.

The runner-up was Ken Brathwaite of Telco Enterprises  with a 598 second high set. Greg Taylor of Coca Cola Avengers downed the pins for the second high game of 226.  

 Leader in the Ladies category was Xynea Johnson of Bahamasair Flyers with a 199 second high game and a 541 high three game set. Johnson was followed by Driskell Rolle of the TK Falcons with a 218 high game and a 522 second high set.

In other team scores, the Bahamasair Flyers blanked the Fresh Blend Rolling Stones 3-0; the Ten Back Strikers blanked the Coca-Cola Avengers 3-0; the Island Game Strokers blanked the TK Falcons 3-0; the Duce City E & U Water Coolers nipped the Giga Tech 2-1; the Genuine Knights knocked off the Telco Enterprises 2-1 and the Checker’s Cafe held off the Carib Construction 2-1.

NPBA ACTION

THE New Providence Basketball Association continued its regular season action on Monday night with another double header on tap.

The College of the Bahamas Caribs knocked off the Everybody Wins Legends 95-81 and the Double R Cleaners Services Limited held off the Pyramid Food Rockets 74-70.

The league will be back in action tonight with another double header. In the 7:30pm opener, the Mail Boat Cybots face the Real Deal Shockers and in the feature contest at 9pm, the Athletico Bahamas will face the Commonwealth Bank Giants.

CARIBS HEADING

TO THE USA

THE College of the Bahamas Caribs men’s basketball team, coached by Baccus Rolle, is heading off to Tampa, Florida, to play a series of basketball games this weekend in the Sun Coast Classic.

On Thursday, the Caribs are slated to play their first game at 4pm against the Trinity College. They will come back on Friday to play their final game against Florida College at 8pm.

CAT ISLAND

FUND RAISER

THE inaugural Godfrey Kelly Class C Cat Island Regatta is scheduled to begin at noon this weekend in Montagu Bay.

Some of the top C Class boats confirmed to compete are the Dream Girl, Sweet Island Gal, Jacob’s Ladder and the Witty K. The regatta is being used as a Cat Island Sailing Club fundraiser. Entertainment will be provided by the Genesis Warhawks Junkanoo Group and DJ Golddigger.

The 60th Annual Cat Island Regatta is scheduled for July 29 to August 1 in New Bight, Cat Island.

BGF TRIALS

THE Bahamas Federation of Amateur Bowlers hosted its trials for the 2016 Bahamas national training squad and the following bowlers were selected based on their total pin fall:

Men - David Slatter, Sonith Lockhart, Lee Davis, Derrick Burrows (new), LaSheikh Major (new), Kelsey Rolle (new), Ritchie Pyfrom and Byron McClain.

Women - Driskell Rolle, Janice Hoyte, Jonice (Joy) Lockhart, Xynea Johnson, Marina McClain, Kayla Nixon, Joanne Powell and Tara Johnson.

Out of this field, the federation will determine who goes on to represent the Bahamas at the various international tournaments this year.

BOXING SHOW

CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club is scheduled to present its ‘Back on Track’ amateur boxing show 7pm January 30 at the Wulff Road Boxing Square.

Special recognition will be given to Lennox Boyce, Champion Amateur Boxing Club’s 2015 Amateur Boxer of the Year.
