PETER Turnquest took an angry swipe at Free National Movement (FNM) leadership candidate Loretta Butler-Turner last night amid fractious scenes at the party’s convention, insisting “respect must be earned”.

In the keynote address on the second night of the convention, the party’s incumbent Deputy Leader targeted the Long Island MP, reprimanding her for far exceeding her allocated 25-minute time slot.

In a two-minute diatribe preceding his prepared speech, the East Grand Bahama MP said the FNM was not built on the chaotic and fractured practices on display so far at the convention.

“If you want respect, you must first show respect. Respect must be earned,” he shouted to resounding applause by hundreds of delegates. “The party I knew way before I knew what politics was is nothing like this.”

Mr Turnquest, much to the chagrin of his detractors in the room at the Melia Nasau Beach Resort, emphasised that the unseemly scenes would be brought to an end on Friday, firmly implying that an overwhelming victory was on the way for him and leadership candidate, Dr Hubert Minnis.

Directly addressing Mrs Butler Turner’s five-point strategic plan she outlined earlier in the evening, he contended that symbol of the starfish, the logo of the plan openly displayed by the Long Island MP at the rostrum, did not matter.

Mr Turnquest stated emphatically: “The only symbol that matters tonight is this, the torch.”

Mrs Butler-Turner’s camp were believed to be unhappy about chants of ‘Roc Wit Doc’ during her speech coming from Dr Minnis’ supporters and claiming it was disrespectful.

With chants of “Peter” ringing through the convention hall, an angered Mr Turnquest suggested that he had to “find a way to calm down”.

At the end of his speech, he returned to the fractured nature of the FNM, calling on delegates to make the “smart and best choice” when voting on the leadership positions today.

“Delegates and Bahamians, I encourage you to stay the course with Dr Hubert Minnis and Peter Turnquest. Make no mistake about it, our only objective is to see all Bahamians succeed and to create wealth for our citizens. We are dreaming big and we know with your support and prayers we will achieve great things for our country together.

“Let us ‘Roc wit Doc’, who has demonstrated respect for all of his colleagues despite being bated into public arguments, whose temperament speaks of self-confidence, control and a spirit of tolerance.”

Dr Minnis and Mr Turnquest face a challenge from Mrs Butler-Turner and Dr Duane Sands for the leader and deputy leadership respectively today with the result announced tonight.

Having regained his composure after his initial outburst, Mr Turnquest criticised the government for its many failures during its time in office.

Mr Turnquest highlighted the Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP) referendum record, inability to sustain its heavily touted “bridge to the future and laughed off the government’s “Bahamians First” mantra.

He juxtaposed the Christie administration’s many botches with the FNM’s record with the Princess Margaret Hospital’s Critical Care Block, Emergency Room facility at the Rand Memorial Hospital in Grand Bahama and success of the roadworks project under the last Ingraham government.

“I hope that all Bahamians now fully realise that this PLP government is not good for The Bahamas and that this fabled bridge is as incomplete and rickety as the designers and planners who conceived it. It’s time for them to go.

“For two years we have had ministers flying up and down to China wasting valuable man hours and money - because everyone goes first-class - with absolutely nothing to show for it and no accountability. I suppose they forgot the Chinese are pretty good with technology and teleconferencing is possible today with amazing clarity.

“With an unemployment rate in New Providence said to be 13.2 per cent and in Grand Bahama 14.7 per cent - most of which represents women - with youth unemployment in excess of 30 per cent, this PLP government should be the last to talk about Bahamians First.”

Mr Turnquest called the government’s employment numbers “shameful and disgraceful”.

He recommended the establishment of platforms for education, crime, energy reform, fiscal responsibility and innovative industry development. The East Grand Bahama MP said he wants to see biomedical facilities in The Bahamas and software developers creating new software. He said the next FNM government will introduce real education reform to give children a foundation for the “building blocks to knowledge”.

“The fabled double investment in education continues to fail our children and our future,” he said. “Thousands of children continue to leave school, with only about 50 per cent actually graduating, with little to no skills and a job market unprepared to receive them.

“Your next FNM government will continue to equip our discipline forces, including a new Corrections Facility where our hard-working officers are not made prisoners themselves by virtue of having to work in that hell-hole eight hours a day.

“An FNM government will make trade and industry a key focus of our program to grow our economy and provide new careers for our people. The FNM will bring relief to this situation with a short, medium and long term plan centred on the immediate engagement of PPP (public-private partnerships) arrangements with known generation providers and a plan to develop alternate fuel sources right here at home. Whether it be solar, bio fuels, wave or geothermal technology, a serious effort to reduce our reliance on costly fossil fuels will be undertaken.

“The FNM proposes programme-driven expenditures, where each initiative is evaluated and costed for its effectiveness verses its cost, tangible and intangible. We also propose a fiscal rule where these large unexplained contingent amounts we see in the annual budgets are reduced or eliminated. Where any expenditure over a defined variance is brought back to Parliament or to a Committee of Parliament for review and approval,” he added.

With the breaking news that LBT has withdrawn from the leadership race, Bahamians are waking up this morning to the fact that Hubert Minnis will be leading a clearly fractured FNM into next year's general election. Regardless of Minnis's deficiencies and regardless of the obvious disharmony within the FNM, the reality is that the FNM represents the only realistic option for voters if the calamitous and corrupt reign of the PLP is to be ended. Minnis has a job on his hands trying to bring his party together. He has done a bad job up to now but he hasn't been helped by the histrionics of BLT. It is time now for her to consider her political future and either work to help Minnis and the FNM or leave for some other party. The internal strife within the FNM must end NOW and EVERYONE needs to get behind Minnis whether they rate him or not. The country simply cannot afford another five years of PLP corruption - it really would be the death knell for life in The Bahamas as we know it.

You are truly delusional 'Honestman'. If Minnis is unable to lead a unified political party by commanding the respect of the vast majority of its current members and past supporters, there's no way in hell he'll be able to lead our country. Minnis wreaks of corruption and incompetence and is an utter embarrassment for many Bahamians who were for many years die hard supporters and financial backers of the FNM, but have since abandoned the party because of Minnis. If it were not for Minnis, Perry Christie and the PLP would be decimated in the next general election. But sadly, Minnis alone will be singularly responsible for handing the corrupt Christie-led PLP government another five year term. Minnis has from day one of his assuming the leadership of the opposition and the FNM party itself been all about putting himself and his own interests above the interests of the country. His inflated ego and insatiable hunger for power has him totally oblivious to his serious limitations as a politician and leader; he simply cannot understand and fathom that he is so disliked by so many many Bahamians no matter what their party affiliation may have been historically.

It is clear from last night that NEITHER Minnis nor BLT have the ability to unify the FNM. It is a fractured party but even a fractured opposition party is better than another five years of the Yellow Peril. The first priority is to defeat the PLP, the second priority is to find a better leader than Minnis. The second priority will be redundant if we don't deal with the first. I am not delusional, I am a realist. Any vote for the DNA, independent candidates or abstension from voting, simply hands the government to the PLP. This would be the death knell for this country. So right now the FNM is the only VEHICLE for Bahamians to use if they want the PLP removed. I get it that you and many others can't stand Minnis but tolerating him for now is perhaps the price we have to pay to get rid of the PLP. If the DNA was better organised and had better quality candidates, I might have a different view but they are not a real party yet and certainly won't be in time for May 2017.

Suggest you do like most us will be doing......vote for the independent candidate who will be running in your constituency if you know him or her to be reputable, honest and literate....or not vote at all. That's the reality sadly. Minnis should be left alone to attend to the official bereavement service and burial of the FNM party for all time to come. You need to wrap your head around the fact that the FNM party no longer exists....and that is rightfully the legacy of one Hubert Alexander Ingraham, more affectionately known as "Hubiggity'. For decades we, the Bahamian people, have been played as fools by Ingraham and Christie alike....taking our country to the very brink of financial ruination!

(As you know, this year, our party’s leader has left us unable to finance our own convention. I (Loretta) stepped up and made a financial commitment that enables us to gather as a party this week. Since then, there has been nothing but disorganization, half-truths, and back room deals from our leader. All you need to do is look at the schedule to see how he is trying to keep me and (Senator) Duane Sands from speaking in front of you).

----------------Loretta Turner-Butler----------------

Comrades shouldn't the public get a "I (Loretta) stepped up and made a financial commitment" clarification as to exactly who put up the $100,000. Some have publicly said that it was raised more from a GoFundMe plea to the party's money backers?

Screw Peter Turnquest. LBT paid 150 grand. Same as Minnis. She was to be given equal time. You're a cheat Pete...

Shame on you. You are a part of the team that killed the FNM...

What a disaster! There is no way now I am voting FNM. No way!

Doc may have won the battle (FNM Leadership) but I doubt he will win the war (get people to vote for him and his cronies). Frankly, I'd rather just not vote.

How the hell do you call for "unity" on the first night and then let the people disrespect Mrs. Turner like that? This is wrong on so many levels.

If you're a registered voter or intend to register to vote in the next general election, I respectfully suggest you do like most us will be doing......vote for the independent candidate who will be running in your constituency if you know him or her to be reputable, honest and literate....or not bother to vote at all. That's the sad and harsh reality of the situation those of us fearful of another PLP five year term find ourselves in. Are these people serious they can not run a party and they want to run a Country, ?? At least they can not blame the PLP for their mal functioning party. But the FNM party was not built on a firm foundation so it crumbles.

Comrades! I'm also of the opinion that it wasn't just Montagu's Richard's comments that were out of order but one particular comment spoken last night by deputy leader Peter, should also have been received as gut-wrenching into the way he must think? Anyone paying close attention to what Peter said last night, knows this was no slip of the tongue? It was read forcefully off the pages of his prepared text. But still, unlike Montagu's Richard, who I have long seen as a capital jackass, I am willing to debate with Peter why he would have said what he said?
