POLICE in New Providence have arrested five men and seized three handguns in three separate incidents in a 20-hour period from Friday evening, including foiling an armed robbery.
According to reports around 1.30am on Saturday an armed robbery took place at St Albans Drive, Chippingham, in which a man was robbed at gunpoint of a watch, cell phone and a gold chain.
The culprit drove off in a blue Chevrolet Blazer but shortly after the vehicle was intercepted by officers from the Selective Enforcement Team and three adult males were arrested. A pistol was seized and the stolen properties were recovered.
In an earlier incident around 5pm on Friday, officers from the firearms unit arrested two adult males who were found in possession of a pistol.
Around 1.45pm on Saturday, officers from the Selective Enforcement Team acting on information went to an abandoned building in western New Providence and recovered a handgun. No arrests have been made and investigations continue.

Everyone should have noticed that the country have been enjoying a sustained period of relative peace and quiet over the past few weeks. All major incidents of crime has been solved and culprits arrested within hours of ithe happening. Robberies home invasions, rape. The courts continue to hand down hefty 40-55 year sentences for persons convicted of murder and it is having a definitely positive effect on crime. MURDER is down by 65-70% this month (July) compared to July 2016, when the country recorded a record 20 murders. Last year the country was recording a murder every 2.3 days on average. This year so far has averaged 1 every 3.5 days and one every 5 days for the month of July. If everyone pray and the numbers continue to go down, 2016 can see the lowest number of murders in five years.

If the next four months can be as quiet and peaceful as July do you know the murder count can be UNDER ONE HUNDRED? The lowest it has been in TEN years?

Forget the obsession with the murder count. Armed robberies and house invasions count more towards people's feelings of insecurities. New Providence is not a safe place to live for many and any drop in the murder count does not bring peace of mind.

Anyone notice during election time that crime is almost non existent, during the recent FNM convention crime dropped really low. Here's a thought, maybe its the politicians fueling all of the crime and during convention and election time they are too busy to hire their thugs to commit the crimes and put fear into everyone, then say they have the answer for crime.

Crime has been on a downward trend before the convention. It has been over 20 days since a murder took place. Last year a murder was happening every 2.3 days. As the police get murders under control they can focus on other crimes and make the country safe and feel safe again. Honest man is not honest if he says otherwise.

Let's get this straight. Any reduction in the frequency of murders is welcomed but whether there are 80, 100 or 120 murders per annum is not the main barometer in terms of how safe people feel. Home invasions, robberies and rapes count just as much to the average Bahamian because these crimes are generally crimes against law abiding citizens. As we all know, a large percentage of murders are committed by criminals against criminals. That's why I suggest the focus should be on reducing armed crime in general and not just dwelling on whether the number of murders is up or down on any given month. As an aside, I believe the RBPF is doing an excellent job with the resources available to it.
