A GUNMAN was shot and killed early yesterday morning by a man he was intending to rob, police told The Tribune yesterday.
The assailant, who was armed with a shotgun, approached a man who had just parked his Honda vehicle at his residence at Lexington Avenue near Wulff Road, Central Detective Unit Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle said.
Upon seeing the assailant’s firearm drawn, the man then got his weapon and shot his attacker in his upper body, Mr Rolle said.
The gunman, who was recently released from the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services, then fled the scene but collapsed nearby a short time later.
Police have not released the victim’s identity, as his family has not been notified. However, police said he was in his early 20’s.
Police were called to the scene around 1am.
This incident marks the 53rd homicide in the country this year, according to The Tribune’s records and came four days after a young man was shot multiple times and killed while sitting in his car waiting for his girlfriend.
He was parked outside of Jimmy’s Take Away off Carmichael Road around 1.30am last Sunday when the shooting occurred.
According to police, that victim was sitting in his car outside the takeaway restaurant waiting for his female friend, who was closing the establishment, when a man with a handgun approached him and shot him multiple times before fleeing the area on foot.
The woman drove the victim to the parking lot of the Carmichael Road Police Station where he died shortly after his arrival.
The Tribune understands he is Huey James, also known as “Slug”.

While I am happy one less thug is off the street...the question has to be asked though...was the man who shot the robber using an unlicensed handgun at the time of the shooting? While there should be no question with regards to the self defense concept and no murder charges pending, the issue of what HIS weapon is should still be dealt with and whatever penalties come from that need to be brought to bear.

You are on the wrong side of this issue my friend. If a referendum was held tomorrow on whether Bahamians without a criminal record should have the right to bear arms without the need for a license, the overwhelming majority of Bahamian voters would vote a most resounding "YES!". Today, thanks to the gross incompetence of people like Bernard Nottage and Keith Bell, it is better to be armed for self-protection and the protection of one's family rather than you or a member of your family becoming one of the countless many murder victims!

Hey...don't get me wrong, I'd have a handgun for self defense tomorrow if it was a legal option...but unfortunately it's not, so whether its self defense or not, if the person firing the shot is using an unlicensed firearm you kind of have to enforce something.

The day that Bahamians are given the right to bear arms without the need for a licence is the day we can truly "turn the lights out" on this country. You might as well re-name us the southern Florida islands if that were to happen. We don't have to copy every aspect of American culture. Liberal American gun laws are responsible for frequent mass shootings perpetrated by individuals who purchased their weapons legally. Bahamas has enough problems without importing that problem! Furthermore, statistics from the USA show that persons with guns in the home are at greater risk of dying from a homicide in the home. Having a gun just makes you feel safer.

FYI...the radio news says he retrieved his licensed shotgun and shot the would be robber.

This is NOT a homicide.! There was no intent or motive.
This was pure Self-Defence!
Last news reports confirmed that the gun WAS licensed.
BUT.!... the police were still deciding what charges to bring on this man!
GOD HELP THIS POOR FELLOW !!
First he had to defend his very own life, !! NOW he is going to have to defend his livelihood and existence ! as by the time he is dragged through the courts he will be ruined !!

While the police cannot issue a gun licence for protection or self defense, many businessmen get a licensed shotgun because it is the closest they can come to protecting themselves when opening, operating or closing their businesses, or when going home at night. But now police are saying persons cannot travel with a loaded shotgun in their car and the gun must be in a case. Some say it must be on the back seat or in the trunk of the car. So if a person is travelling home he must leave the car, go to the trunk, take the gun out of its case, load it, then be prepared if he is attacked by someone waiting to rob him. Fortunately in this case the person being targeted was prepared.
