Top high school basketball players in the country raise their stock

THE best high school basketball players in the country took full advantage of the opportunity to showcase their skills at the 33rd Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic.

While the CC Sweeting Cobras emerged as the story, winning their fifth tournament title in thrilling fashion with a 55-54 win over the Sunland Baptist Stingers, several other athletes raised their stock in an effort to secure scholarships, set the tone for next year or simply end the season on a positive note.

Tabernacle Baptist Falcons guard Jankeo Russell finished as the tournament’s leading scorer at 20.7 points per game, shooting 47 per cent from the field and 37 per cent from three-point range.

In the first of the Falcons’ six games of the tournament, Russell scored 13, 11 and 11 points but exploded in the final three.

He went for 29 points against the QC Comets, 24 against the St George’s Jaguars and a tournament high 36 points against the CI Gibson Rattlers.

Fedlor Somera of the Clement Howell Eagles out of the Turks and Caicos Islands was the second leading scorer at 20.3 points per game. He held the tournament high with 30 points in his debut, until he was surpassed by Russell on day six. Sormera also went for 23 points and 11 rebounds against Teleos.

Other top scorers in the tournament were Westminster’s Grevaughn Goodman at 17 points per game (three games), Mt Carmel’s Jehosaphat Cooper also with 17 points per game (three games), Jefferson Oliver of Prince William at 16.6 points (seven games) and Trae Davis of the Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins at 15.5 points (four games).

Teleos centre Jevaughn Ferguson was the top rebounder at 10.5 per game.

The Cobras’ Anderias Blacks grabbed 10.2 boards per game while CR Walker’s Cormardo Seymour also grabbed 10 per game.

Azaro Roker of Anatol Rodgers and Peter Grant of Eight Mile Rock each finished with 9.67 rebounds per game.

Prince Willaim Falcons versatile big Adam Johnson was the tournament’s leading shot blocker with 30 blocks. Ferguson finished with 18 blocks, Adderley St Dick of CI Gibson had 15 blocks while Roker blocked 14. Stephon Johnson led the tournament with 29 steals followed by Russell’s 24 and Adam Johnson’s 23.

Russell also led the tournament in three-point shooting while MVP Corey Sands was the top free throw shooter at 85 per cent.

The high school basketball circuit now shifts it’s attention to the upcoming National High School Basketball Championships March 10-14 in Grand Bahama.
