CAMERON Riley, Inecia Rolle, Xavier Robinson, Haylie Turnquest, Healthcliffe Khane, Ashley Michel, Rhan Miller and Christelle Straub demonstrated that they are among the best junior golfers in the Bahamas.

The eight golfers emerged as the various divisional champions and were among the winners of the competitions also contested at the Bahamas Golf Federation’s 2016 Junior National Championships at the Ocean Club Golf Course, Paradise Island, over the weekend.

A total of 42 golfers contested the two-day event, which Alena Hutchinson, the chairman of the junior division, emphasised was one of the most competitive.

“Junior golf is on the right direction in the Bahamas and this weekend’s play was a good indicator of that,” said Hutchinson, a former golfer who went through the programme. “We had three competitive divisions play this weekend and they were all very competitive.”

The golfers competed in a 36-hole stroke play, a 178-hole division (nine holes per day) and a 12-hole division ( six holes per day).

Christelle Straub captured the 12-hole divisional title with a total score of 76, followed closely by Jaiden Isaacs with a score of 82.

Rhan Miller was crowned the 18-hole divisional champion as he posted a score of 109 in his debut at the nationals. He was followed by Jaden Ward with a score of 112.

And in the 36-hole division, Cameron Riley clinched the boys’ title with his two-day total of 159, while Inecia Rolle carted off the girls’ title with 171.

In the battle for the divisional titles, Cameron Riley won the boys’ 16-18 with a total of 159, Inecia Rolle won the girls’ crown with 171, Grand Bahamian Xavier Robinson retained the boys’ 14-15 winner with 177 and Haylie Turnquest, in her debut, won the girls’ title with 158. The boys’ 11-13 crown went to Healthcliffe Khane with 173 and Ashley Michel captured the girls’ title.

“Some of our junior golfers who participated this weekend will be named to our Bahamas Junior National Golf Team that will compete in this year’s Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships to be held in Jamaica,” Hutchinson said. “The team will be named no later than the third week of April.”

Hutchinson, however, noted that they are looking for sponsors to assist in the cost of expenses for the team. Interested persons can contact Hutchinson at bgfjuniorgolf@gmail.com.
