A MAN was arraigned in Magistrate’s Court yesterday concerning a recent seizure of a loaded revolver by police.

Derek Carey Jr, of Quakoo Street, appeared before Magistrate Andrew Forbes facing two charges concerning the March 15 seizure: possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, he was found with a brown and chrome coloured Rossi revolver and four live rounds of .38 bullets without being the holder of a license or certificate granting permission to have the gun and bullets.

According to initial police reports, around 8am, officers received a tip that a man was spotted off Market Street brandishing a handgun.

Officers on patrol saw a suspicious looking man, however, the suspect fled and a foot chase followed. The suspect was shot in the leg following a struggle with officers who caught up with him. Police said they then retrieved a .38 revolver from his waist band with four live rounds of ammunition.

Carey Jr, who pleaded not guilty to both charges when called on to answer the allegations, will stand trial on June 7 and could face a fine and/or seven years imprisonment if convicted of the offences.

“The offences for which you are charged are not bailable. Therefore, bail is denied and you are remanded to the Department of Correctional Services. “However, you have a right to make an application to the Supreme Court for bail. Should a judge in the Supreme Court grant you bail, you are obligated to return here on June 7,” the magistrate said.

Carey Jr informed the court that he had recently been shot and did not wish to miss treatment.

The magistrate made a note of this before remanding the accused to prison.
