A YOUNG man is dead after he was shot in the chest during an altercation with another man late on Thursday night.

Police say shortly after 11.30pm, the victim was involved in an altercation with another man at a park on Quarry Mission Road that led to him being shot. The suspect fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. The victim was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries shortly after his arrival.

Police have not identified the victim but the Tribune understands he is Denero Burrell.

This latest killing took the country's murder count to 46 for 2016, according to The Tribune's records.

Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

Police are also searching for a suspect responsible for an armed robbery on Thursday night. Reports are that shortly after 11.30pm, the victim was at his home on Odle Corner, off East Street, when a man with a handgun approached and robbed him of a cell phone, cash and a shotgun before fleeing on foot.
