St Andrew’s and St Augustine’s celebrate volleyball triumphs

ST ANDREW’S School girls and St Augustine’s College boys took the senior Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) volleyball championships at Aquinas College last Thursday.

Leading into the playoffs for the senior girls Queen’s College, St Anne’s, St Augustine’s and St. Andrew’s all finished the regular season with the same record 6-2 win-loss record but finished in that order due to the tiebreaking procedure.

St Anne’s beat SAC in the playoffs to advance to the chanmpionship game, where they met St Andrew’s, who beat QC.

St Andrew’s won the first set 25-21, and secured the title by winning the second set 25-11. “I am very proud of the girls,” said Katie Roach, St Andrew’s head coach. “This was an excellent win and a great way to finish the year. We came up short in the softball season and lost to QC in the soccer final. All of the girls were motivated to win this time, especially those senior girls who will be graduating shortly. Those girls will be missed, but I am so pleased they ended as champions. Winning is a great feeling, and not everyone gets a chance to experience that in high school. These girls played with heart, Hurricane pride, and we came out on top.”

In the senior boys division, QC finished the regular season on top with an 8-1 record. SAC, Aquinas and St John’s finished with the same 7-2 record and after the tiebreaking procedures finished in that order. QC won their playoff game against St John’s to advance to the championship game against SAC, who beat Aquinas.

The championship game between QC and SAC was a tense and exciting game, going to a third set to determine the victors. After switching sides on the court during the third set, QC led comfortably 11-5 but SAC’s head coach, Jevaughn Saunders, asked for a time out to rally his team. It proved effective as SAC fought back to win the decisive set 15-13 and claim the championship title.

The junior divisions are scheduled to play this week at Aquinas College, with the boys playing today and Wednesday, and the girls on Tuesday and Thursday. The play-offs and championship games are scheduled for Friday.
