BAHAMAS national team cyclist Justin Minnis is in the Intensive Care Unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital after being injured a “hit and run” accident early on Saturday morning.

During a training session on the Tonique Williams-Darling Highway around 6am, Minnis was reportedly hit by a black truck, sending him about 10 feet in the air before he landed in the centre median.

He was rushed to hospital and is now in the ICU undergoing further testing and evaluation.

“The truck never stopped and left him there on the road,” said Barron ‘Turbo’ Musgrove, president of the New Providence Cycling Association. “Thankfully someone stopped and called the ambulance and police to the scene.

“From the damage seen to his bike, only the grace of God still has Justin with us today.”

Musgrove said Minnis’ family has advised him that he is still in and out of consciousness and not fully capable of responding.

“Whilst his body appears to be in good shape with no broken bones, there are concerns about his non-responsiveness and as a result he was transferred to the ICU for more detailed testing and evaluation.,” Musgrove said.

The Bahamas Cycling Federation is partnering with both the Ministry of Sports and the Bahamas Olympic Committee to see how they can devise some safety measures for the cyclists as they train on the roads.

“Those partners are in the process of establishing a committee to deal with the location of the vehicle involved in the accident and securing assistance to help defray cost of medical expenses for Justin,” Musgrove said.

He noted that once they have obtained it, they would forward it to the public.

“We the officers of the federation, like other members of the cycling community, are very concerned about the wellbeing of Justin and we ask that you continue to cover him and his family in prayers as we are believing God for healing and a full recovery,” Musgrove said.

However, he advised the public that only the immediate family is being allowed access to see Minnis at the hospital at this time.
