Eat humble pie

EDITOR, The Tribune.

It is unfortunate that the call by Sir Michael Barnett and others to the PLP government to apologise for its role in the referendum debacle of  2002 has been met by senior members of the government by remarks like “what for?” Indeed not only should the government apologise for this but it should also apologise to the Bahamian public for ignoring its wishes in respect of the so-called gambling referendum of 2013.

For, in discussing the forthcoming referendum with members of the public in groups and singly, it has been my experience that  the two most frequently asked questions are:

  1. Why should I vote yes, when in 2002 the PLP asked me to vote No?

  2. Why should I vote in this referendum when the government will do whatever it wishes despite how the people vote?

Despite assuring these persons that the amendments are for the good of the people of the country and giving examples, and also assuring the listeners that constitutionally the government is obliged to obey the wishes of the people on this occasion, I move away with the feeling that they will either vote no, or abstain.

Consequently, the government should eat humble pie and apologise, if it is serious about these amendments being passed.

Re-post: The first 3 bills are fatally flawed and wide open to abuse......the door will be opened to many foreigners obtaining Bahamian citizenship in exchange for agreeing to vote PLP down the road. Our country will be flooded with cheap foreign labour at a time when Bahamian families are having great difficulty feeding, clothing, educating and buying medicine for their children. The PLP can't provide us with decent paying jobs yet they want to let thousands of foreigners into our country so that they get more votes to stay in power. Go figure! As for the fourth bill, it's all about breaking down the institution of marriage to satisfy the divide and conquer policies of the political elite and their favored cronies. Wake up Bahamians.....it's important for all of us voters to get to the polls on June 7th and vote a resounding "No" to all 4 of these bills. These bills and the referendum are not about gender-equality; don't let the corrupt Christie-led PLP government pull the wool over your eyes!

Why apologise? what good will it do? This is not a PLP , FNM of DNA issue . It is a Bahamian issue. I voted NO under the FNM and i will vote No under the PLP. I did vote Yes to to the gaming bill. It made sense to tax them. Jeanne you and Pam and a few others should get together and form a bitter old women club. how about that? The former Chief Justice should just get along, and stop playing politics.
