THE Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s Frank ‘Pancho’ Rahming Primary School Track and Field Championships swung into high gear at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium yesterday.

There were very limited final events contested on the track, but four events highlighted the competition on the field.

In the boys’ B high jump, Erich Fishbacher from Bishop Michael Eldon will take the title to Grand Bahama after he won with a leap of 1.33 metres.

Denero Hall of the Eleuthera All-Stars picked up the silver and D’Angelo Dawkins of St John’s College kept the bronze in New Providence with the same height.

Rohan Culmer of Temple Christian secured the boys’ C softball throw crown with a heave of 40.40m. He topped the field that saw Grand Bahamian Jason Cooper of Walter Parker Primary carry the silver medal with 40.03 and Cameron Woodside of North Andros clinched the bronze with 33.30m.

Another title stayed in the capital with a clean sweep by New Providence in the boys’ A triple jump as Jason Woodside of Claridge Road Primary won with 9.56m. Theon Missick of Temple Christian followed with a leap of 9.44m. Zayne Strachan of Queen’s College won the bronze with 9.15m.

And in the only girls event contested, North Andros’ Destiny Hanna took the girls’ A shot put crown with her toss of 8.54m. Gabrielle Murphy of Temple Christian got the silver with 7.49m and Janay Higgs of CW Sawyer was the winner of the bronze with 7.33m.

On the track, athletes competed in the preliminaries of the 100 and 400 metres. The top eight competitors advanced to the finals that will be contested today as the three-day meet comes to a close.

Yesterday’s competition closed out with the final of the 4 x 100m relays for girls and boys in the open categories.

Today, competitors will compete in the boys’ A long jump, girls’ B softball throw and girls’ C long jump on the field.

The track will be jam-packed with finals in the 800m, 200m, 400m, and 100m in all divisions as well as the 4 x 400m in just the open girls and boys divisions.

The meet is featuring more than 1,000 athletes competing for more than 30 schools from throughout the country. It is being held in honour of Frank Rahming, the former assistant director of sports in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture who was responsible for the formation of the meet more than two decades ago.
