Perpall's Tract drainage

EDITOR, The Tribune

I live in Perpall’s Tract in Nassau and I have been living there for over 40 years. It is a lovely and peaceful neighbourhood, with caring and concerned individuals. I would not choose to live anywhere else in this country.

However, we in Perpall’s Tract have been plagued with a nagging problem from since I can remember our family moving here. The drainage system in our neighbourhood is terrible. Attempts at solving the problem were made some years ago; however, even though the results were good, in our opinion, they were not good enough.

My good neighbour pointed out to me today that if Nassau were to be “hit” with a category 4 or category 5 hurricane, our residences would be seriously compromised. So we are trying to be proactive in trying to convince the Minister of Works to take our plight under extreme consideration and come to a conclusion that these people are in desperate need of help.

I am not exaggerating. Nassau has been fortunate for a long time now as far as experiencing the destructive properties of dangerous hurricanes. We, in Nassau, were lucky again last year when the Bahamas were in Joaquin’s path. Joaquin utterly destroyed some parts of the Family Islands. Part of the remnants of these destructive hurricanes is flooding and all that is attendant with it. What we are trying to do in Perpall’s Tract is to head the anticipated problem off at the pass.

It was an excellent suggestion by my good neighbour to write this letter in the hopes that Phillip “Brave” Davis would see it and do something about it very quickly - before it is too late.

Mr. Lightbourn, the drainage problem you have in Perpaull's Tract is not unique as much of Nassau, particularly the south side is extremely low lying. That notwithstanding, one of the primary contributors to flooding in New Providence is the deplorable condition of the storm drains and street gutter systems. Just look at West Bay St adjacent to the Fish Fry, Bay St itself or Dowdeswell St & Malcolm Park just to point out a few areas, every single drain and gutter choked with garbage, dirt and weeds. A thunderstorm such as the one experienced on Monday, producing just over 1" of rain, caused massive traffic problems due to street flooding as the water has nowhere to go. You are absolutely correct in that a wet hurricane, and not even a major one, would cause catastrophic flooding throughout New Providence but unfortunately the people responsible are either asleep at the wheel or, like Mr. Davis, have more pressing matters on their minds.
