AS the restoration efforts for Hurricane Matthew continue throughout the Bahamas, one local sporting organisation has announced its effort to assist.

The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations has established “Project Quick Relief,” a fund aimed at aiding persons in need on the affected islands.

BAAAs president Rosamunde Carey began the fund with a donation of $500 and encourages all interested persons to deliver donations – whether monetary or essential supplies - to the BAAAs office at the original Thomas A Robinson Stadium.

BAAA public relations officer Phillip Gray said the federation saw fit to join the restoration effort immediately.

“We wish to focus on monetary donations along with water, non-perishable food, clothing and athletic gear in excellent condition,” Gray said in a press release, “All checks should be made out to the federation, noting that it is for hurricane relief. We wish for as many stakeholders of the federation to participate in this initiative as we take care of our own.”

President Carey has selected officers Sandra Laing and Dexter Bodie to lead the assessment of needs. The BAAA will work side by side with the Red Cross and HKers in their efforts.

“This initiative is consistent with her concerns prior to the onslaught of Hurricane Mathew via her correspondence with stakeholders. Post the hurricane President Carey has been making direct contact with constituents of the federation, in particular those in Grand Bahama and Andros.”

Islands in the central and northwest Bahamas have been some of the hardest hit areas with many residents left void of shelter, food, clothing and other necessities in the storm’s aftermath.
