AID ACCEPTED BY MINISTRY

THE Ministry of the Environment and Housing has accepted an offer of assistance from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to assess conditions in the vicinity of the New Providence Landfill following a bush fire last month which spread to the landfill and threatened residents living in Jubilee Gardens.

PAHO has brought a team consisting of two technical officers to New Providence who will conduct site visits at the New Providence Landfill and the Jubilee Gardens Subdivision. They will advise on safety issues and produce a report once the assessment is completed.

The PAHO team is collaborating with officers from the Ministry of Health, the Department of Environmental Health Services, the Water and Sewerage Corporation and the National Emergency Management Agency.

The Ministry of Environment is pleased to have the expertise of an independent and highly recognized international organisation such as PAHO involved in the aftermath of the extensive fire, officials said in a press release.
