Day four of the Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic traditionally produces the first group of eliminations in the annual tournament as the field starts to dwindle headed into mid-term break for most schools.

The 35th edition saw four teams eliminated yesterday at the AF Adderley Gymnasium, and finish the tournament winless.

Doris Johnson

Mystic Marlins - 46

Mangrove Cay Stingers - 22

It was a quick turnaround for Mystic Marlins after they suffered a heartbraking loss at the end of day three. Henrick Sands led the team with 14 points and they opened day four with a lopsided win to remain alive in the double elimination.

Kaylen Davis scored six points while Donte Hepburn and Chabiel Brown each scored fuve.

The Mystic Marlins opened the game on a 21-8 run and took a 29-13 lead at the half. Sands scored the last five points of the quarter and Doris Johnson took a 36-18 lead at the end of the third.

The lead reached 20 for the first time when Brown’s fastbreak layup gave his team a 20-41 lead with 3:38 left to play.

After a disappointing end to their GSSSA season, Mystic Marlins head coach Denycko Bowles said his team continues its efforts to regroup in the postseason.

“We had to come back from that close loss the night before. We let one slip away. It was important for us to come out and regroup. Focus on all the small things we did not do before. I think for the most part we executed but we still have to tighten up in a few key areas, especially on defence. I think we do that we will give ourselves a pretty good chance of competing and playing on a high level that we’re capable of.”

Berkley Nairn had six points to lead Mangrove Cay.

Aquinas College Aces - 41

Clement Howell Eagles - 36

The beach soccer team is struggling on the pitch at the CONCACF Championships and the visiting Eagles from the Turks and Caicos didn’t fare much better on the basketball court.

John Nixon finished with 18 points and seven steals and six assists to lead the Aces while Rodriquez Gittens finished with 14 points and several big plays down the stretch.

The Eagles struggled early shooting the ball and opened 0-6 from the field before Dion Gibson scored their first basket of the game. They scored two of their next three from the field and added one at the line to tie the game and erase a 5-0 deficit. The Aces led 6-5 at the end of the first.

Wilkins Sylvian led the Eagles with 17 points but didn’t get much help on offence.

Sylvian made a fastbreak layup on the Eagles opening possession of the second to give them their first lead of the game. He followed with a three from the top of the key on the next possession and a fastbreak layup for a 12-6 lead.

Nixon would spark an Aces and they would go on a run of their own to eventually regain the lead on a Gittens fastbreak layup. The Aces led 19-15 at the half.

The Aces led 23-19, and game was tied again at 25 on Gibson layup and went ahead on free throws from Sylvain. The Aces shifted the momentum defensively and their press led to the last four points of the period and a 32-29 lead headed into the fourth.

Gittens scored the first four of the fourth for the Aces to take a seven point lead. The Eagles battled back and a Sylvian three with less than a minute left to play three cut it to one, but Gittens answered with a layup on the ensuing possession to seal the win for the Aces as they advanced.

Gateway Christian Eagles - 54

Queen’s College Comets - 51

Bimini’s top team notched one in the win column behind efficient shooting from their guards.

Lamarduae King led the Eagles with 14 points and shot 4-9 from three point range. Densel Jones and Cavon Dames each finished with 11 points while Bradley Lightbourne added nine and Dre Hudson finished with eight.

Trailing by one with 15 seconds left to play, the Comets had possession with an opportunity to go ahead but the Eagles knocked the ball away on a drive to the basket and emerged from the scrum with possession and a fastbreak layup for Lightbourne to seal the win.

Sirmar Rolle led the Comets with 19 points, Xavier Johnson scored nine while Christopher Johnson and Elliot Greenslade each finished with eight.

After the Comets scored the opening basket, the Eagles reeled off 10 straight points, camped by a King three pointer. The Eagles led 12-6 at the end of the first.

King with another timely jumper for Gateway and Jones followed with a runner to take a 22-12 lead into the half.

The Comets trimmed the deficit to five, but Dames got a fastbreak layup and three point play to push the lead back to eight. Rolle converted his second three point play off a putback in as many possessions and the Comets trailed by just five. Greenslade’s three pointer just beat the buzzer and trimmed deficit to 38-36 headed into the fourth.

Early in the fourth, Ellis’ steal and layup tied the game at 38, but King made his fourth three of the game to take the lead back 41-38. The Eagles extended it to six on a Dames three point play. The Comets unraveled late with turnovers on six consecutive possessions. The Eagles lead got to as much as nine before the Comets made a late surge. Greenslade’s steal and layup cut it to two, 51-49 with under a minute left to play but they were unable to pull ahead.

Jack Hayward Wildcats - 57

Mt. Carmel Cavaliers – 23

The Wildcats led nearly wire to wire against an overmatched Cavaliers team who made just eight field goals.

Sherico Anderson led the Wildcats with 12 points, Jalen Hall scored 10, Clevon Clarke added eight and Trimaine Fergsuon finished with seven.

Preston Ferguson led the Cavaliers with 10 points.

Mt Carmel surrendered seven turnovers in the first quarter and the ‘Cats led 10-3 at the end of the period.

The run continued in the second after the ‘Cats put the halfcout press on, and the Cavs struggled to get the ball beyond halfcourt. It spurned an 11-0 run in less than two minutes.

Mt. Carmel managed just a single field goal in the second as the lead grew to as much as 35-8 at the half.

Ferguson’s layup gave Jack Hayward a 30 point lead, 40-10 with 4:36 left to play in the third.

The Wildcats reserves played the duration of the fourth but were able to maintain the advantage throughout.
