Cleaning up the garbage

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Thank you for publishing my letter concerning the garbage nightmare at Montagu following the regatta to honour Sir Durward.

I also called the Ministry for the Environment and spoke to the permanent secretary’s assistant, who promised to call the director of Environmental Health.

It would appear that both avenues yielded results so thanks to both of you.

As I said in my previous letter, there is a solution to the garbage problem created by events and festivals.

Make it a requirement for the organisers to place a non-refundable deposit (barring event cancellation) for a contract with a proper garbage collection agency to clean up the area at the crack of dawn the following morning.

The contract should be verified independently by the Department of Environmental Health and officers from the Department should visit the site the following morning to confirm that the area has been cleaned properly.

Make the organisers acknowledge in writing that they are responsible for any mess left behind.

If they don’t live up to the terms of their agreement, prosecute them with the view of a hefty fine.
