UNDER THE theme "Defining The Purpose Of The Church" the Transfiguration Baptist Church celebrated its 90th anniversary this past Sunday.

In recognition of its work and witness in the Bain and Grants Town community, church members celebrated in grand style with events leading up to the special day.

These events included: a Finance and Wellness Seminar, a Choir Reunion Grand Concert, a Back to School Outreach, an evening of Family Fun, a Family Fair and Steak Out, an Evangelism Service in the Parking Lot, a week of Pre-Anniversary Services, a mid-morning Evangelism Thrust and Community Outreach activities.

Over the years the church has developed various ministries which cater to children, young adults, women, men and families - helping individuals convert into fellowship with Christ and develop responsible church membership and stewardship.

Church member Ingrid Sears believes the anniversary or birthday of an institution or individual is always significant, as throughout the years they often face defining moments which can make or break them.

"Transfiguration Baptist Church recognizes that the church is not just the four walls of a building, but consist of individuals; we are the church. This church has found that by setting aside time to worship the Almighty God, learning the word of God, the support of fellow believers, prayers, training a child in the way to go and trusting God, they have thrived and made it as a church for 90 years. They remain committed to the work of the Almighty God and the work of their forefathers, recognizing that people need the Lord," said Ms Sears.

During its 90 years the Transfiguration Baptist Church has had three pastors including: Reverend Charles H Thompson, Reverend Garnet King (1977) and presently Reverend Stephen E Thompson (2004). Ms Sears noted these pastors have led and were supported by many people in the growth and development of the church. Such individuals include: the late Reverend Lloyd Hamilton, Reverend Aubrey Carter, Deacon Maxwell Stubbs, Maryann Thurston, Reverend Dr Harriet McDonald and Deacon Doris Collie.

Speaking of the anniversary Reverend Thompson said he believes it will speak to people in ways to help revive minds and rediscover the purpose of the church from God's vantage point.

"I do believe that our God is able to take us to a new place in ministry. Let us be encouraged and seek to please our Lord, amen," said Reverend Thompson. He further encouraged the audience to go forth and study the word of God, remembering that God has not given members of the church a spirit of fear.

Soon after the church service, the pastor, officers and members gathered in the Charles H Thompson Youth Centre for fellowship and a special anniversary meal. At the gathering, old friends and new had the opportunity to eat, reminisce, share and laugh.
