Barge breaks from moorings

A LARGE barge broke its moorings in Montagu harbour yesterday and was adrift for a number of hours before being captured and secured.

Images of the barge floating near other anchored vessels were widely circulated on social media.

According to a Royal Bahamas Defence Force spokesman, the Harbour Patrol Uni was alerted to the breakaway barge but found it too big to contain by itself. The Port Authority was subsequently informed and successfully hired a local company to secure the barge and bring it under control and safely back to harbour. There were no reports of any injuries nor damage.

Up to press time, the RBDF could not provide details about the origin of the barge nor who would carry the costs of the recovery operation - the authorities or the owner?
